Beshear sends national guard after semis gets stuck on icy, snowy hills

GLENCOE, Kentucky (WXIX) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear urges drivers to avoid Interstate 71 in Northern Kentucky after multiple Southbound cicadas become stranded on steep snow and ice hills .

The Kentucky State Guard and Kentucky State Police are on the scene in Glencoe, Gallatin County, clearing up this “primary backup,” he tweeted.

“Everyone be safe!”

A blizzard hit the tri-state before dawn on Friday, bringing record-breaking temperatures, rain, snow, ice, “flash-freeze” conditions and chills from subzero gusts.

Kentucky is not alone.

Depending on where you live, there is ice on the Tri-State snow trails that can drop anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of snow overnight.

KSP provides assistance to stranded motorists, and several agencies are working to remove vehicles blocking the road.

Kentucky’s rugged highways have been a particular problem for the semifinals since snow and temperatures began to free-fall on Thursday night.

Several cicadas collided on Interstate 275 at the Carol Lee Cropper Bridge in northern Kentucky, bringing traffic to a complete stop.

Boone County dispatchers said it happened around 10:15 p.m. when the Arctic front began to move.

In Boone County, the eastbound lane of Interstate 275 was closed on and off for hours into Friday morning.

Two semi-trucks bound for Kentucky and several other vehicles skidded as they tried to climb the hill across the Carroll Cropper Bridge over the Ohio River.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department rushed tow trucks, salt trucks, and plows to the scene.

The initial lockdown lasted nearly four hours.

Interstate reopened around 2am

That stretch shut down at least three more times late Friday morning.
