MIAMI – Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa entered the NFL’s concussion protocol the day after the team lost to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, coach Mike McDaniel said.
McDaniel said Tagovailoa showed symptoms of a concussion when he spoke to team doctors on Monday, admitted it, and was immediately placed on protocol. He added that he didn’t know which play it was.
This is the second time Tagovailoa has participated in the protocol this season.
Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will take first-team snaps while Tagovailoa is out, but McDaniel says it’s too early to name a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. Told.
“I just want people to do what’s really right with the information, the science, and all the medical expertise that we rely on,” McDaniel said. I care about the player very deeply, I take it very seriously, I just want him to be healthy and have peace of mind in that regard.
Tagovailoa entered concussion protocol after the Dolphins’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 and was briefly hospitalized after hitting his head on the turf. He missed his next two games for the team and returned in Week 7.
Tagovailoa had another big blow four days before the Cincinnati game, during a win over Buffalo. He appeared to show symptoms of a concussion, but was assessed and stayed in the game.
The NFL has since changed its concussion protocol to require that any player exhibiting possible concussion symptoms, including lack of balance or stability, miss the remainder of the game.
Tagovailoa said in October that injuries like the one he suffered against the Bengals didn’t weigh him down. It was the second time in his playing career that he had been hospitalized with a football-related injury, including a dislocated hip he suffered during his final season with Alabama.
“I think that kind of thing weighs more on my parents than on me just because I’m the son,” he said in October. , I just want to do good things, I want to do it right for our team, I want to do it right for this organization, I want to do it right for the people who work hard every day in the building, that’s it. enjoys being here, enjoys everyone in the building, so when you can’t do something about it and help our team and organization, it’s It’s really the worst.
Tagovailoa has career-highs in all major passing stats this season, but the Dolphins have lost four games in a row and are the seventh seed in the AFC playoff picture. A win would secure a playoff spot for the first time since 2016. Or if he wins one game and the New York Jets lose his one remaining game, he will qualify for the playoffs.
Miami will face the Patriots and Jets to round out the regular season schedule.
