Heavy rain and strong gusts of wind forecast for SF Bay Area
As 2022 draws to a close, much of the San Francisco Bay Area is expected to see up to 5 inches of rain Monday night after a rapid succession of sustained showers. said the National Weather Service.
NWS meteorologist Rick Canepa told SFGATE: “And this pattern arrangement isn’t going to change any time soon. It looks like it will be with us for the rest of the week once it’s set up.”
Kanepa said the significant amount of moisture emanating from Hawaii will cause showers in the North Gulf, followed by moderate to heavy rains that quickly spread throughout the rest of the area. The heaviest rainfall is expected Monday night through Tuesday morning. Up to 2 inches of rain is expected for most of the region, but up to 4 inches is possible in higher elevation areas, including the hills of the North Bay and East He Bay.
According to the NWS, rain can result in localized flooding, flooding of streams and creeks, and puddling of roads. Be careful while driving.
The next chance of rain arrives Wednesday or Thursday night, followed soon by another system on Thursday or Friday night, with an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain expected for most areas.
“There are big benefits here because the drought conditions are alleviated,” Canepa said. “This is what we want to see.”
Canepa said gusts of 35 to 60 miles per hour are expected across the Bay Area, and a wind warning is in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Temperatures stay in the mid 50s for most of the week, with overnight lows dropping to the high 40s.
As conditions can change, it is advisable to stay up-to-date with the NWS and other weather sources, especially when traveling on vacation.
“Overall, we expect a erratic and chilly pattern of rainfall to continue,” Canepa said.
