Communities celebrate Kwanzaa with dance, music, food

Kwanzaa celebrations took place on Friday in West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach and Wellington.

At The Square in downtown West Palm Beach, local dance and drum artists showcased their skills and taught the community about the holidays and African culture.

Organizers of the Afrique Ngozi Dance and Drum company say their goal is to connect young girls through the arts and support diversity in Palm Beach County.

The group also performed at Riviera Beach and Wellington.

Kwanzaa is seven days, and each day has a different meaning.

The 5th day of Friday represents purpose.

Other days are unity, self-determination, collaboration and responsibility, cooperative economics, creativity and faith.

Riviera Beach hosted the 3rd Annual Kwanzaa Celebration by City Councilman Shirley Lanier.

Celebrations included food, music and dancing, and an opportunity for people to learn about the meaning of Kwanzaa.

“Kwanzaa is for people of African descent to reconnect with their native traditions and values,” said Kalimba Love, one of the organizers, in a Riviera Beach City Facebook post. “The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa are designed to lead us to excellence, and we must embrace them.”
