Riverside, CA (KABC) — Community members and fellow law enforcement colleagues mourn the death of Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Isaiah Cordero, who was killed in the line of duty.
Lovers brought flowers and candles in memory of Cordero at the memorial service for his beloved deputy at the Julpa Valley Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
Local resident Alicia Caloca remembered Cordero as a joyful person who always smiled and seemed happy.
The beloved 32-year-old lawmaker was shot dead Thursday while on duty during a traffic stop. He parked his truck for pickup in his valet Julpa before 2pm. As he approached the car, the driver pulled out a gun and shot him, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said at a press conference Thursday night.
Witnesses called 911 and residents tried to help Cordero until paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A massive search then began for the shooter spotted in San Bernardino County, sparking a chase on a highway through both counties.A spike strip disabled two rear wheels, sheriffs said but the truck continued to run.
News videos showed dozens of California Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s vehicles, including armored SWAT vehicles, chasing the truck.
On Highway 15 in Norco, the truck was finally disabled, lost an axle and crashed, Bianco said.
According to Bianco, “At the end of the chase, the suspect opened fire on the deputies with a handgun,” and they shot back, killing him.
William Shay McKay, 44, of San Bernardino County, has a long and violent criminal record dating back to before 2000 and has been convicted of multiple arrests for kidnapping, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. was included. A highway patrol dog was stabbed by McKay’s accomplice, sheriffs said.
According to Bianco, McKay was convicted last year of a “third strike” that would have meant 25 years in state prison, but a San Bernardino County judge set his bail. backed down, allowed him to be released, and later released him. Arrest for failing to appear at his sentencing.
“He should have been immediately sentenced to 25 years for life,” Bianco said. “We wouldn’t be here today if the judges were at work,” Bianco said.

Caloka, who brought flowers to the Julpa Valley Sheriff’s Office Friday morning to honor Cordero, believes the lieutenant’s death didn’t have to happen.
“This could have been prevented. It just makes you more angry and a little more upset about what the system could be like,” she said.

Hours after the shooting, dozens of motorcycle cops and patrol cars escorted a hearse carrying the lieutenant’s flag-clad coffin from the hospital to the county coroner’s office.
