ACUA food drive nets nearly 18,000 pounds of food

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – The Atlantic County Public Utilities Department’s recycling team collected 17,913 pounds of food over the course of two weeks in December. It’s part of the agency’s annual holiday food drive that benefits community food banks in Southern Branch, New Jersey.

The annual drive provides an easy opportunity for residents to donate to those in need by placing a donation bag of canned food next to the trash can on collection day. Donations will be sent by ACUA’s collection team to his CFBNJ in Egg Harbor Township.

“ACUA has partnered with Southern Branch, a community food bank in New Jersey, on this initiative for 32 years,” President Rick Dovey said in a release. “Since the first collection in 1991, this drive has weighed over 1 million pounds of him, an incredible achievement for both organizations.”

About 70,000 people, including one in five children, are food insecure in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. Inflation is taking a toll on many households, putting more demand on local food banks to meet their needs.
