Experts share 5 tips to help you save on groceries
(CNN) β It’s a new year, but it seems likely that grocery store prices will continue to rise.
Consumers expect food prices to rise 3.5% to 4.5% this year, according to the USDA’s Food Price Outlook.
Experts say that with a little planning, you can keep more cash in your pocket while enjoying your favorite items on the menu.
Financial counselor Kumiko Ai recommends five steps to reduce your spending.
Tip #1: Always start with a list.
It’s a good idea to check your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer inventory before heading to the grocery store.
“Our food bill is the silent killer of our budget,” she said.
She said she uses her list to buy only what she needs, not what she might be tempted to buy.
Her second tip is to shop at home. It’s easy to avoid the temptations of grocery stores altogether and shop online for grocery pickup or delivery.
If you’ve exceeded your budget, it’s easier to remove items from your virtual cart.
βIt’s also very easy to compare prices because we bundle all similar food categories together,β says Love.
A third tip is to look at the price per unit, not just one item. In some cases, it may be cheaper to buy an entire item than to buy a pre-cut or ready-made product.
Tip 4 is to use the loyalty app. Find coupons and other great deals by joining the grocery store’s loyalty program, following us on social media, and downloading our app.
Tip 5 is to buy generics rather than brand name products.
“Store and generic brands are often made in the same facilities as the brand names we gravitate towards.
