Tennis great Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with both stage 1 throat and breast cancer, her agent told CNN in an email Monday.
“This double blow is serious, but still fixable.
“I expect good results.
Navratilova, who won 59 Grand Slam titles in her career, already battled breast cancer in 2010.
The latest prognosis is said to be good, and she is expected to begin treatment this month, according to a statement.
Navratilova’s agent, Mary Greenham, said Navratilova discovered swollen lymph nodes in her neck at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, Oct. 31-November 7.
A biopsy was performed, and she was later diagnosed with stage 1 throat cancer, her agent said. was found and was later diagnosed with cancer.
Greenham said both cancers were in early stages and the results were excellent.
Navratilova enjoyed a long career with 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam doubles titles and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She still holds her all-time record of 167 titles on her WTA Tour.
After retiring from singles in 1994 at the age of 38, she continued to play doubles and win titles well into her 40s.
She continues to be involved in the sport as a coach, broadcaster and ambassador for the WTA Tour, emphasizing the importance of preventive testing to combat certain diseases such as breast cancer.
Navratilova was scheduled to cover the upcoming Australian Open from her Tennis Channel studio, but Greenham added that she wants to attend from time to time on Zoom instead.
